He has been sent various items; like old floppy discs and some x-rays that he will recreate into a portrait. He explains how he uses x-rays for tonal ranges and transparent layers, as an alternative to traditional canvas and paint. Nick also reads a letter to demonstrate how people have sent personal things to inspire his work and how, to make a connection, he sends them something in return, such as a piece of his artwork. This clip is from Making Art Work, a BBC 2 Learning Zone compilation of short films following six UK-based leading artists as they create new artwork from scratch. They reveal where they find inspiration and give practical tips on using a variety of materials and techniques. Styles covered range from contemporary paintings and landscapes to quilling, sculpture and even portraits made from floppy discs.
